EBooks……are they actually back?

June 8th, 2009

I’m still in my 20’s, so I obviously haven’t been around for the whole web era, yet there is one thing I remember.  Ebooks.  I was probably 15 and kazaa had just come out, and I gotta say I was a bad boy downloading whatever I wanted.  However the one thing I thought was brilliant was Ebooks.  I stocked up on them from tech manuals to novels, however have you ever tried reading one.   It was horrible your eyes would water, your back would hurt.  It was not pleasant sitting at a computer for hours trying to read something.   That was the point I realized you just couldn’t replace a book.  Nothing can replace laying in your bed reading a real tangible book.

Well 7 years has passed since then and a lot has change (except reading PDF’s still isn’t something to be remembered).  There actually are forms of hardware that make reading electronically a little more worthy of trying.  I recently bought into the iphone hype and the first thing I tried was the Kindle App.  Being there’s no way I could afford the actual Kindle I thought the app was the next best thing, and I gotta say I couldn’t be happier.  Although there are a few other ebook readers out there.

iPhone

My favorite form of the book reader.  Why? Because phone’s are no longer just phone’s and people have to learn that.  Its awesome caring a device around where I can read/check mail/pay bills/gps….etc.  Feels like the future to me.  The software however is made by amazon and is in direct relation to the Kindle, and to top it off i can buy books from wherever im at.  Currently reading Eragon :)  Of course maybe im just a little bias cause i have an iphone and being an apple fan boy i need to amerce my self in anything apple.

Kindle

If your looking for a standalone device for book reading then go for a kindle.  Whats awesome about it, is that it only apply’s power when changing a page.  kinda like an etcha-sketch  it brings the magnetic elements to the screen and displays out the page.  Super cool technology.  We definitly live in some cool times.  I envision this to be sorta like the Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy book :)

Sony Ebook Reader

To be perfectly honest there’s not much hype around this one.  It seems as if no one is buying it.  However I love Sony, great TV’s and video games.  Except what they did to star wars galaxies was horrible.  They butchered it :(

All in all Ebook pdf’s are dead. EBook Readers are ALIVE.

How do you get your tech news?

June 6th, 2009

The question of the century, or at least the one I’ve always struggled with.  How does one keep up? How do you make sure your not learning yesterday’s news?  How do you do all this and still maintain a social life?  Well I can give one hint for this.  Podcasts. Personally being my favorite form of new’s and entertainment.  What’s funny is i dont really even watch much tv anymore.  What i do is pull up all this on my computer that’s hooked into my tv and watch media from there.  Well back to podcasts, whats the benefit other then reading just news you ask?  well you can do it while you work.  Put the speakers on and just listen.  I’m gonna list my favorites and here and what they offer.

Diggnation

revision3.com/diggnation.
Diggnation.com

Founder of Digg.com who also use to be on techtv (which i watched when i was in high school) Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht.  This is probably my favorire podcast.  Basically its two guys sitting down on a couch talking about the top stories of digg.com and drinking beer.  What show could possible be better? NONE.

Along the lines of Diggnation, you should take a look at the parent company Revision3.com.  The have a whole plethora of podcasts for your enjoyment. Along with my second favorite podcast….

Hak5

Hak5.org

As the name imply’s a video cast of hacking and day to day usefull development tools.  This podcasts isn’t really for the end user, but you can still get a lot useful information from there.  From hacking your little netbook to dns tunnel from anywhere to putting camera’s on cats, this show has it all.

Twit.tv

twit.tv

I’m definitly a huge apple fan boy.  Actually its bad enough that my friend’s shun my half the time when talking tech :)  Well my favorite show for the latest apple stuff is Macbreak Weekly.  Its amazing ive learned a lot from listening to this show.  Anywho check the host site twit.tv there are a bunch of podcasts to listen to.  Oh did i mention there all hosted by Leo Laporte the tech king?
